What is the Dead Sea?
It might seem that bathing in the Dead Sea is like bathing in any other water tank. We go in, swim, relax, it’s fun. The Dead Sea, which isn’t even a sea, but a drainless lake, is located on the border of Jordan, Israel and Palestine. It is said to be the largest natural spa in the world. During the peak season, it is difficult to find a free room in nearby hotels. Beneficial water and mud are famous in the cosmetics industry due to their health-promoting and beautifying properties. No wonder – you can find more than 25 chemical elements in it, which have beneficial effects on human health. Even the atmosphere near the reservoir itself has health-promoting properties. For this reason, stays at the lake are recommended for:
- People with cardiological problems,
- People with respiratory diseases
- Persons with skin problems such as psoriasis and joint diseases such as rheumatism,
- People suffering from mental illnesses such as neurosis and depression.
There is one problem. The reservoir regularly shrinks by about one and a half meters each year. This is, of course, mainly due to the role of man and its intensive exploitation. And so, some hotels that were built in the 1970s right on the shore now have to offer transport to the beach for their guests.
Be careful!
The Dead Sea is dead for a reason. Nothing has the right to survive there, except for some species of bacteria. The salinity and mineralization of the water is so high that it gives no chance of survival, and moreover, it pushes everything to the surface of the water and prevents drowning. And no matter how hard you try, you won’t go down. But it is possible to drown! Drinking the saltiest soup in the world can, in extreme cases, cause visceral burns, so I also advise against it. You need to be prepared to swim in the Dead Sea. How? Keep reading.
Dead Sea Manual
- Take off your jewelry. Nothing should happen to the gold, unless it turns out to be a tombac. The Dead Sea will certainly verify this. The silver will tarnish.
- Electronics have no chance with this water, be careful with your phone.
- People with anti-reflective coatings should take their glasses off.
- Water shoes or at least flip-flops are recommended. The salt crystals cripple your feet, and the grit is really hot in the summer. You definitely won’t cool down in this water.
- If you are in a place where you have access to nourishing mud, cover yourself from head to toe, being careful with your eyes. If water or mud gets into your eyes – GAME OVER. You won’t wipe them with your hands, which are also wet, and if you don’t have anyone with you to lead you to fresh water, the only solution is to blindly look for it. If you have wounds, torn nail cuticles, cuts or irritation after shaving, be ready for stabbing pain. I know what I’m saying, I constantly have cuticles on my nails.
- Walk slowly to a depth that is comfortable for you. Preferably knee or waist length.
- Lower yourself and lean back calmly. Slowly straighten your arms, then your legs. For greater comfort, you can place your hands under your head.
- Lie on the water, rest. The relaxation session on the water surface should last about 15-20 minutes, then slowly try to return to a standing position. Many people find this difficult, so it is best to try to lower it or sit on your bottom and try to get up from that position. I do not recommend leaning forward – your bottom will go up, dipping your face in the water.
- After a 5-10 minute break on the shore, you can repeat the activity.
- You can do two things with the oily film that will be on your skin:
- Wash off with fresh water, usually available at the beach,
- Leave it for the rest of the day and absorb the precious ingredients. In the case of this option, there is a significant risk of irritation.
Remember when visiting the Dead Sea!
I do not recommend swimming in places not intended for it. Due to the constantly falling water level in the lowest place on Earth ( the lake is about 430 meters below sea level) sinkholes have formed, up to 10 meters deep. They can prove to be a deadly trap with no way out. I also advise you to be careful with flip-flops if you are at a beach with mud. The mud will drag in and won’t let go of your shoes.
